*When it comes to art imitating life, Anthony Mackie can personally vouch for that. Literally, via Eminem.
During a recent episode of the “Pivot” podcast, TMZ mentioned how Mackie reminisced over his time with the “Lose Yourself” rhymeslayer during the filming of “8 Mile.”
As the duo chatted and got to know each other, the “Captain America: Brave New World” fixture confessed that Eminem was soaking up his life story. All in the name of rap warfare.
Mackie made his big screen debut in “8 Mile” as Papa Doc, the rap rival to Eminem’s B-Rabbit. The enemies’ beef with each other ultimately came to a head as they went one-on-one onscreen in a heated rap battle. A battle that saw B-Rabbit lyrically unload on Papa Doc with lines drawn from Mackie’s past.

The Juilliard School private school training? Papa Doc growing up in a two-parent household in a safe suburban area in New Orleans? It’s all true, straight from the real-life background of the actor who played him!
The winner via rhyme knockout … Eminem.
All in a day’s work for the “Not Afraid” MC, who came up on the battle rap and underground hip-hop scenes before elevating to mainstream success after being discovered by longtime collaborator / mentor Dr. Dre.
Released on November 8, 2002, “8 Mile” is based on the life of Eminem. The critically acclaimed music drama starred Mackie and Eminem, who made their respective film debuts, in addition to Mekhi Phifer, Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon and Brittany Murphy.
The feature was a hit with moviegoers, generating $51.3 million in its opening weekend to become No. 1. at the box office. In addition,“8 Mile” scored an Oscar for Best Original Song for Eminem with “Lose Yourself” in 2003 the first hip-hop song to receive the honor. The hit tune, which was the rapper’s first Billboard Hot 100 number one single, is regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time. In 2024, former President Barack Obama captured headlines when he rapped “Lose Yourself” at a presidential campaign rally in Eminem’s hometown of Detroit.
