*Anthony Mackie, star of the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World,” is facing criticism from conservatives, with some calling for a boycott of the film.
The backlash stems from comments he made at a promotional event in Rome for the movie, where he suggested that his character “represents a lot of different things, and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one.”
“It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable,” he continued.
“This is kinda like an aspect of a dream coming true,” Mackie stated.
A clip of Mackie’s controversial remarks quickly went viral, sparking widespread online debate and intensifying calls for a boycott. His comments fueled criticism of celebrities, who are often labeled as ‘woke’ for expressing progressive ideals.
Anthony Mackie explains what Captain America represents for him:
“Captain America represents a lot of different things & I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity.”

“Strange take. Captain America literally has America in the name and represents American values of freedom, justice, and standing up for what’s right,” said one X user in response to the clip. “Why try to separate that? The character’s whole origin is tied to WW2 America.”
Another person wrote: “I like Anthony Mackie as an actor overall, the dudes really charismatic and talented. But this take is trash, Captain America represents American values and the ideal we should strive for. He can represent all those things Mackie said, but he needs to represent America.”
Some supporters noted that Captain America goes against the US Government in the Marvel movies.
“Captain America 2 and 3 were about Captain America directly going against the US government because they made poor choices based on incomplete information. He’s not a propaganda-spewing mouthpiece and is in fact the direct opposite. So yeah Anthony Mackie is right,” one X user posted.
“I feel like it’s just as important for black kids to see a black Captain America as it is for white kids,” Mackie said.
“Growing up one of my favorite superheroes was green … it wasn’t about race or anything … It was about him being a good guy trying to do the right thing” he continued.
“… it’s very important for kids of all races to be able to watch something and have someone to look up to no matter what they look like, and see that that package comes with a good human being as opposed to what they’ve been perceived as by everyone else.”

The Falcon, played by Mackie in previous MCU films, officially took on the mantle of Captain America in the finale of “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” on Disney+ in 2021.
Here’s the official ‘Brave New World’ synopsis: “After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.”
The cast includes Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford.
Directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige, “Captain America: Brave New World” is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025.
