*A Baltimore judge ruled that Adnan Syed will not return to prison and will instead serve five years of supervised release under Maryland’s Juvenile Restoration Act.
Syed, whose case gained national attention through the “Serial” podcast, was originally sentenced to life plus 30 years for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. His first trial resulted in a mistrial, but in 2000, a second trial led to his conviction on charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, and false imprisonment. In 2022, a judge overturned his conviction, granting him release while additional legal proceedings continued.
Per NBC News, in Thursday’s ruling, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer wrote, “After considering the entire record, the court concludes that the Defendant is not a danger to the public and that the interests of justice will be better served by a reduced sentence.”
The ruling follows years of legal battles, including a motion by a previous prosecutor to overturn his conviction and a reversal of that decision by the current Baltimore State’s Attorney, Ivan J. Bates. While Bates withdrew the motion to vacate Syed’s conviction, he supported reducing his sentence due to his rehabilitation.

“Vacating a conviction says that he is not the individual that committed this crime,” Bates said last month.
Per NBC, Bates called Thursday’s ruling a “just outcome for a tragedy that took the life of a young woman whose family is forever altered. I hope the Lee family can find peace and healing in the aftermath of this challenging experience. My office is here to support them whenever they may need it.”
In a statement, Syed’s lawyer, Erica Suter said, “Given his accomplishments in prison and his work in the community since release, he was a model candidate for a sentence reduction. Adnan is committed to continuing to be a productive member of his community and living a life centered around his family.”
Despite the court’s decision, Lee’s family maintains that Syed is responsible for her death, noting that there is “overwhelming direct and circumstantial evidence” against him.
“We hope that one day Mr. Syed can summon the courage to take responsibility for his crime and express sincere remorse,” said David Sanford, counsel for Lee’s family.
In 2023, Syed’s conviction was briefly reinstated after an appeals court ruled that Lee’s family was not properly notified of a hearing regarding his release. While the case was revisited, Syed remained free, and Thursday’s ruling confirms that he will not return to prison.
