*The American Black Film Festival is marking its 30th year with a major expansion into digital storytelling through the introduction of the ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project. According to the news release, the new initiative expands the festival’s programming by focusing on short-form, vertical video series created by storytellers of color, designed for mobile-first viewing.
Microdramas are episodic narratives produced specifically for vertical screens and social platforms. With episodes typically lasting one to two minutes, the format emphasizes rapid pacing, heightened emotional stakes, and cliffhanger endings that encourage continued viewing and repeat engagement.
By launching the 9:16 Microdrama Project, ABFF aims to establish itself as a leader in the growing vertical content space. The initiative is designed to elevate emerging voices, connect creators with global audiences, and expand access to opportunities within a rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.

“Vertical storytelling is redefining how audiences discover and consume scripted content,” said Jeff Friday, Cofounder & CEO of NICE CROWD and Founder of ABFF. “With the ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project, we are extending ABFF’s mission into this next frontier and ensuring creators of color are not only represented, but leading the evolution of this format and participating in the economic upside of this rapidly expanding market.”
Projects selected for the program will be chosen through a competitive evaluation process overseen by industry professionals from film, digital media, and emerging platforms. These chosen works will earn the designation of Official Selections of the ABFF 9:16 Microdrama Project.
Official Selections will receive curated digital exhibition across ABFF platforms and integrated exposure during the 2026 American Black Film Festival. This visibility is intended to provide creators with industry recognition, audience discovery, and expanded professional reach.
Participants will maintain full ownership and creative control over their work while gaining access to ABFF’s broader ecosystem. Submission guidelines and eligibility details are available through the ABFF website.
The festival’s sponsors include Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO as founding partners, along with Ally Financial, American Airlines, Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and several cultural and media organizations. Additional programming details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Founded in 1997, ABFF has grown into a premier platform for film and television content by and about people of African descent. As it approaches its 30th anniversary in 2026, the festival continues to serve as a key destination for talent discovery, cultural exchange, and industry connection.
