Jada Pinkett Smith is returning to her roots. Netflix has officially greenlit a sequel series to the beloved 1987–1993 sitcom A Different World, with Pinkett Smith set to reprise her iconic role as Lena James.
The announcement dropped yesterday (03-11-26), and the internet collectively lost its mind.
What We Know So Far
The sequel, currently titled A Different World: The Next Chapter, will run for 10 episodes as a limited series—though Netflix is keeping the door open for more.
Here’s the part that’ll make you emotional: Jada isn’t just showing up for a cameo. She’ll appear in multiple episodes as Lena James, now a successful entrepreneur who returns to Hillman for a teaching stint or special event. Lena grew up to be exactly who we knew she’d become—running things.

The Reunion We’ve Been Waiting For
Original cast members confirmed to return include:
Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (still dramatic, still the blueprint)
Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne (glasses flip presumably in his contract)
Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks (still radical, still iconic)
Charnele Brown as Kim Reese
Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson
Glynn Turman as Colonel Taylor in a recurring role
Yes, we’re crying too.
Passing the Torch
While the OGs are returning, the series will also introduce a fresh ensemble of young actors playing current Hillman students. And unlike some reboots that coast on nostalgia, this one plan to tackle modern issues:
Social media activism
Mental health in the Black community
DEI backlash and HBCUs
Generational wealth
The same courage that made the original tackle racism, AIDS, and colorism is coming backup dated for 2026.

The Dream Team
Debbie Allen, the original creator, is executive producing and directing the pilot. If that name is attached, you know the life lessons will hit hard.
Here’s the twist: Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish) is serving as co-showrunner. The woman who literally grew up playing a modern Black college student is now shaping the next generation of Hillman storytelling. Perfect casting.
What Jada Said
At the TUDUM announcement, Pinkett Smith got emotional:
“Hillman changed my life and the lives of so many. Returning as Lena feels like coming home. We’re honoring the legacy while telling new stories for this generation—love, struggle, joy, and unapologetic Black excellence.”
Unapologetic Black excellence? We’ll take 10 episodes, please.
When Can We Watch?
The series is slated for late 2026 or early 2027 on Netflix. Considering how long we’ve waited for a proper reunion, we can be patient. Probably.
Why This Matters
A Different World wasn’t just a sitcom. It was a cultural touchstone. It made HBCUs feel accessible and desirable. It showed Black love, Black friendship, and Black intellectual life in ways network TV had never attempted.
A revival in 2026 isn’t nostalgia bait—it’s a reminder that Hillman College exists in all of us who ever dreamed of something bigger.
