*Amazon Prime Video has officially ordered a new “Barbershop” TV series, expanding the beloved film franchise into a fresh chapter with comedian Jermaine Fowler tapped to star.
The upcoming series is penned by Marshall Todd, co-writer of the original 2002 film, and will revisit the energy and community spirit that defined ‘Calvin’s’ legendary Chicago barbershop, Variety reports. According to the logline, the show centers on Travis “Trav” Porter (played by Fowler), who strives to walk in the footsteps of his grandfather, a revered figure at the original barbershop. Though the faces inside Calvin’s have changed, the shop is still buzzing with lively debates, deep connections, and the city’s cleanest fades.
Max Searle joins Todd as co-showrunner and executive producer. The project also brings heavyweight names behind the scenes, including Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein of Hartbeat Productions. Additional executive producers include Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford of Prominent Productions; George L. Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel from State Street Pictures; Bradley Gardner of Busy B Entertainment; and Tiffany Brown, who will co-executive produce for Hartbeat.
“We are thrilled to announce a new series based on the hilarious and innovative world of ‘Barbershop’ for our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios.
“The television adaptation of this iconic film franchise is in excellent hands with co-showrunners Max Searle and Marshall Todd. We couldn’t be happier with their collaboration and hard work to bring Calvin’s Chicago-based barbershop to life for a new audience on Prime Video,” Sanders added.
The original “Barbershop” film trilogy, released in 2002, 2004, and 2016, along with the 2005 spinoff “Beauty Shop” featuring Queen Latifah, collectively grossed nearly $200 million worldwide.
This marks the second attempt to bring “Barbershop” to television. A previous sitcom adaptation aired briefly on Showtime in 2005, starring Omar Gooding, but only lasted one season. No premiere date for the new series has been announced yet.
The “Barbershop” reboot is part of Amazon’s broader push to develop series based on MGM’s classic IP catalog, which it acquired in 2022. Other projects currently in development include reimaginings of “RoboCop,” “Poltergeist,” and a “Legally Blonde” prequel series.
