*Netflix has released the trailer for director Lee Daniels’ new horror-thriller “The Deliverance,” starring singer Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique.
The streamer describes it as a “genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.”
Here’s the synopsis: Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story, The Deliverance is directed by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels (Precious) and stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique in a genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.

As we reported earlier, “The Deliverance” is based on real-life supernatural events that plagued Latoya Ammons and her three children in Gary, Indiana, around 2011. The incidents include children levitating, becoming violent with one another, speaking in growls and deep voices with no recollection afterward, and exorcisms. Mo’Nique plays a social worker who assists the family through the exorcisms.
Lee and Mo’Nique reunited for the project after several years of acrimony. They last worked together for the 2009 film “Precious.”
Daniels previously collaborated with Andra Day on the Billie Holiday biopic “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday.”
“The Deliverance” will arrive in select theaters on August 16 before debuting on Netflix on August 30.
