*Angel Reese hopes to one day team up with Caitlin Clark in the WNBA.
Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Reese reflected on their ongoing rivalry while noting that she would like to eventually play alongside Clark on the same team.
“Me and Caitlin have been playing against each other since we were kids,” said Reese, Complex reports. “It’s just a full circle moment of how women are viewed when it comes to trash-talking, and it’s okay in men’s sports. So we’re gonna normalize that in women’s sports as well, so it’s just super competitive. I think we’re two great competitors. We brought a lot of fans to this league, and I thought we’re gonna continue to do that, and one day, hopefully, we can be teammates.”
Earlier this year, Clark of the Indiana Fever and Reese of the Chicago Sky were named to their first WNBA All-Star team, the league announced in July. We reported via CNN that this is the first time two rookies are WNBA All-Stars in the same season since 2014.
Reese, who was also named WNBA Rookie of the Month for June, was emotional after learning about her All-Star selection.
“I’m just so happy,” she told reporters through tears. “All the work I put in, coming into this league so many people doubted me – didn’t think my game would translate and I wouldn’t be the player that I was in college … I trusted the process and I believed.”
Reese and Clark’s rivalry hit its peak during the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament championship game. In a memorable moment, Reese taunted Clark by mimicking John Cena’s signature hand wave in front of her face and then gesturing to her ring finger.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been her teammate before, even at USA Basketball or anything like that,” Clark told reporters about linking up with her former college rival after being named to a WNBA All-Star team. “I know people are going to be really excited about it, but I hope it doesn’t take away from everybody else.
“This is a huge accomplishment for everybody on Team USA and everybody on Team WNBA. They all deserve the same praise.”
