*William Stanford Davis was asked to dance during his audition as a janitor for an ABC pilot titled “Abbott Elementary.” He didn’t give it a second thought.
Auditions are a dime a dozen when you’ve been in Hollywood for over twenty-five years, but when he booked the role of “Mr. Johnson,” he thought perhaps it was just another job.
Not so! Abbott Elementary was the smash of the 2020/2021 season and has a bright future on television. Created by Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary has garnered 3 Primetime Emmy Awards and has rocketed William Stanford Davis’ career to new heights.
EURweb’s LaRita Shelby had the great pleasure of speaking with Stan, strolling down memory lane, basking in the success of Abbott Elementary, and forecasting Stan’s future, perhaps on Broadway.

William Stanford Davis has appeared frequently on TV and film on shows such as Showtime’s Ray Donovan, OWN’s If Loving You Is Wrong, Swagger on Apple TV+, TNT’s Snowpiercer and many more.
Stan holds the distinction of having over 100 credits on IMDB.com.
Davis also earned an Emmy Award in 2002 as part of the cast of Rasheen Crawley’s “The Movement.”
However, the classically trained St. Louis native has his sights set on Broadway. He gleams at the admission that fellow Abbot Elementary star and new Emmy Award winner Sheryl Lee Ralph (original star of Dreamgirls) has vowed to help him get there.
Mr. Davis commands the stage as powerfully as he commands his roles on TV and film. In 2006 he was nominated for an Ovation Award for Best Supporting Actor in the studio production of August Wilson’s “Fences” and he was among the stellar cast of “North on South Central,” which garnered five NAACP Theatre awards in 2004.
Many Hollywood actors have benefitted from William Stanford Davis as a director and acting coach. Among his students are Laila Ali, Mc Lyte, Alisha Boe and Dylan Strayberry. According to Stan; “Film makes you famous, TV makes you rich, but Theatre makes you good.”
He also encourages late bloomers in the industry to keep on blossoming. William Stanford Davis is living his best life with a meteoric boost from Abbott Elementary.
Congratulations are in order for Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti and of course “Stan the Man” Davis aka William Stanford Davis.
