*Abandoning the script Sunday night, BET Awards host Jamie Foxx brought actor-singer Donald Glover on stage at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater for an impromptu tribute, including the comedian’s own take on Glover’s “This is America” video and distinct choreography.

Kendrick Lamar took home the most awards during the evening, including best male hip hop artist and album of the year for “DAMN.”

Beyonce was crowned the best female R&B/pop artist, and Cardi B won for best female hip hop artist.

Migos took home the best group award, while SZA nabbed best new artist.

Tyler Perry presented the lifetime achievement award to R&B legend, Anita Baker. During her speech, Baker encouraged industry veterans to mentor younger artists. “I would ask the singers that are veterans here. When you see the young ones, tap them on the shoulder. They need you,” she said. “Let’s take care of each other. We need each other. We can’t do it alone.”

During the program, Foxx spoke out about the recent death of rapper XXXtentacion, saying: “We can’t get too used to these types of things. We’re too used to young people being killed. It’s like we don’t even trip anymore.”

Meek Mill delivered a surprise performance while wearing a hoodie with XXXtentacion’s face on it. For his first live performance since being released from prison in April, Mill debuted a new single titled “Stay Woke,” featuring Miguel. The song speaks to the experiences of young men in impoverished communities.

Other performers Sunday night included Nicki Minaj, Migos, Meek Mill, Janelle Monae, Miguel, Snoop Dogg, YG, 2 Chainz, and more.
