Review: New ‘Avengers’ Film is Awesome Times ‘Infinity’

*The new “Avengers: Infinity War” film features some of the most iconic superheroes in the history of cinema against an ultimate threat that is supposed to culminate a decade’s work of plot threads and character development for over two dozen characters and nearly 20 films.

Such hype and crushing expectations would seem to be impossible to live up to and surpass. Fortunately for us all, directors Joe and Anthony Russo are up to the task.

To say that every character gets their chance to shine is an understatement.

“Infinity War” makes “Captain America: Civil War” look like “Before Sunrise”.

What can you say about a film that BEGINS with the two most powerful Avengers – the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) – taking on Thanos (Josh Brolin), with Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the most formidable Marvel Cinematic Universe villain of the past decade, deciding to be Thanos’s ally or foe – and then continually escalating and raising the stakes and dramatic tension for the next 2 and a half hours?

There are a LOT of moving parts here. As the action features over 20 heroes and shifts to various locales, there are various scenes that would be a worthy climax for virtually every other sci-fi/superhero/ film ever made.

It is clear that the Russos are determined to give audiences one helluva a ride. So much so, some may feel like a visitor at an amusement park that gets to ride every ride ten times and pillage every concession stand until they’re ready to burst.

With all the CGI-fueled spectacle and elaborate fight scenes, what truly makes the film memorable are each hero’s personal journey, which will have special resonance for those who have followed them for a decade, but will have an impact even for those who are seeing them for the first time. With so many moments and characters being introduced to each other, the Russos go the “less is more” rote with dialogue – and make every word count.

Fittingly, the Big Three .of Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor and Captain America (Chris Evans) shine the brightest when the stakes are highest. Knowing they are going against a foe who is determined to collect all six Infinity Stones and wipe out half the life in the entire universe has them each at their most determined, powerful and dangerous.

Spider-Man (Tom Holland) also acquits himself well. Meanwhile, going against the man she knows like no other, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora (Zoe Saldana) finally comes across as “the most dangerous woman in the galaxy”.

Oh, and  Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) gets more screen time as Dr. Strange than he did in his own movie. His role is full of surprises.

Like all the best genre fare, the battles and impressive pyrotechnics mean something because the Russos give our heroes time to emote. not only are there moving scenes between Tony Stark and  Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Gamora, to name two, but many others as well. The stakes are so high and the mood so tense, that the bits of comedy will come as a welcome relief and not forced.

In the end, the joy of seeing these heroes interact with each other in battle against an increasingly omnipotent foe is rivaled only by how inspiring they are as they continually up their game accordingly, all of which leads us to an unforgettable ending.

“Avengers: Infinity War” is one of the most entertaining films of all time.
