Duke University Investigating Noose on Campus; Students March

*Duke administrators and police are trying to determine who hung a noose from a tree on campus, what the school president described Wednesday as a vicious symbol in a region where lynchings were once used to terrorize black residents, reports the Associated Press.

President Richard Brodhead told a crowd of several thousand gathered in front of the university’s Gothic chapel building that their presence was a rejection of that symbol. And he said that while administrators and campus police investigate who displayed the noose and why, it is up to each individual to reject racism.

“One person put up that noose, but this is the multitude of people who got together to say that’s not the Duke we want,” he told the crowd. “That’s not the Duke we’re here for, and that’s not the Duke we’re here to create.”

Officials say the noose was found about 2 a.m. in the plaza outside the Bryan Center, the student commons building.

Black Student Alliance vice president Henry Washington said he and about 14 other students saw the noose hanging overnight after being alerted via Twitter.

“We wanted to see if it was an actual thing. And yeah, there it was,” said Washington, a sophomore from Aliceville, Alabama.

Brodhead and Provost Sally Kornbluth earlier sent a joint email to students, saying the Duke campus “has been jolted over the past few weeks by several racial incidents, including a report of hateful speech directed at students on East Campus” and the discovery of the noose.

Brodhead, Washington and other members of the Black Student Alliance had previously scheduled a meeting Wednesday morning to discuss the campus atmosphere for blacks.

“Obviously the conversation needed to shift to kind of the things that happened this morning. We expressed to President Brodhead that students were just kind of exhausted. Students didn’t know how to feel,” Washington said.

Students Tara-Marie Desruisseaux, 19, of New York City, and Jada Gibbs, 19, of Dumont, New Jersey, said the incident came days after they helped host a recruiting weekend at Duke for talented black high school students from around the country. Duke has about 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It costs about $60,000 a year to attend as an undergraduate, including room and board, according to the school’s website. About half of all undergraduate students receive financial aid.

“Now I feel like they’re looking back at us and wondering, what were they selling me and what do they accept that they think Duke is so great?” Desruisseaux said.

While minorities may be forced to cope with racism at other selective universities, “I think the fact that Duke is in the South gives it something different from Stanford or Harvard,” she said. “I think the way that racism resonates is a lot stronger here just because not that long ago Duke’s campus was segregated and the only blacks on this campus were cleaning up bathrooms.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Duke Police at 919-684-2444.

I would think that colleges/Universities- with public student hang-out areas on any campus..there should be a stationed video camera facing.. if not? This is the reason why to have one stationed…. If there was, the racist idiots who did this.. would be indentified immediately as students attending Duke or an outsider.. Plus students should be finger printed as well their sophmore year and again their senior year.. that another way to catch these Hell bound race based hatas..

.. anyway, the KKK has empowered their move DIFFERENTLY now.. the KLAN has big money(Koch Brothers) and RE-PUB-LEE-KLANS control the HOUSE AND SENATE (because you negroes don’t VOTE in BIG numbers as result to mid term elections and this is what happens racist whites take over capital hill and have..they control everything now but the white house in america)… and the KLAN are becoming more bold and blatant as result to the nation’s first AFRI-American president..

DUKE UNIV should be up in arms..protesting LOUDLY and demand the university to do better… and not given this water down speech that DOES NOTHING for the morale of Duke students..espeically non-white students….

..DUKE should go after these RACIST PPL/students like never before seen on campus-even offer a reward to anyone who knows or suspect (money talks -BS walks)..

..any and everyone is suspect( becuz afri american students could have done this as well just to start some racial SHIZT on campus)..

..and if these are students of DUKE who did this?..Whomever- should be easy to locate… find them, charge them with a HATE CRIME which stays on a person’s record for life and you’re put on the united States domestic terrorist watch list thru the FBI..and all your family members as well for life.. ..

WE can stop these PPl by giving these hatas the most harsh penalty given under the law.. a hate crime is a hate crime .. it doesn’t matter how subtle..

‘I Don’t Need Practice Shots. Against You?’ Colbert Challenges Obama to a Game of ‘Wastepaper Basketball’ (Watch)

Stephen Challenges President Barack Obama To A Game Of “Wastepaper Basketball” – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (Nov 24, 2020)

*President Barack Obama was in full “That’s what I do”-style trash talk mode when Stephen Colbert challenged him to a game of “wastepaper basketball” during his appearance Wednesday on “The Late Show.”

Colbert waited until Part 3 of the interview to ask #44 if he wanted to play, then had the nerve to ask Obama if he needed to warm up with some practice shots.

“I Don’t Need Practice Shots. Against You?,” Obama responded. When Colbert suggested they wager on the outcome, with Obama having to mention the host in his next book if he loses, Obama asked, “Well what if I win?”

“What do you want?” Colbert asked.

Obama shrugged off the whole prospect, saying, “Nobody’s gonna read your book anyway.” He then added, “It doesn’t matter, I’m not gonna lose.”

Colbert said he would donate to Obama’s library if he loses. And with that, the game commenced.

Obama was “crushed” by Colbert, 8 to zero.

“That’s what I do!” Colbert yelled mid-thrashing.

Scotland Aims to End ‘Period Poverty,’ Becomes First Country to Make Tampons/Pads Free [VIDEO]

*Scotland aims to end ‘period poverty’ by becoming the first country to offer free menstrual products in public facilities.

On Tuesday, the Scottish Parliament voted unanimously in favor of the Period Products bill, CNN reports. Women across Scotland will now have universal access to products such as tampons and pads in public buildings, including schools and universities.

“The campaign has been backed by a wide coalition, including trades unions, women’s organisations and charities,” Monica Lennon, the lawmaker who introduced the bill last year, said ahead of the vote. “Scotland will not be the last country to make period poverty history.”

After the vote, Lennon said the decision was “a signal to the world that free universal access to period products can be achieved.”

Here;s more from CNN:

The bill’s accompanying financial memorandum estimates it could cost around £8.7 million a year by 2022, depending on the number of women who will take advantage of the free products.

The new law was praised by a number of equality and women’s rights groups as well as politicians from across the parties represented in the Scottish Parliament.

“Proud to vote for this groundbreaking legislation, making Scotland the first country in the world to provide free period products for all who need them. An important policy for women and girls,” Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on her official Twitter page after the vote.

Local authorities and education providers across Scottland will be required to ensure that menstrual products are available for free.

Last year, England and New Zealand launched initiatives to provide free sanitary products in schools.
