*Donald Trump announced plans to restore the name of North America’s tallest mountain to Mount McKinley, reversing a 2015 decision by President Obama to rename it Denali.
The mountain, long called Denali by indigenous Alaskans, was officially named after President William McKinley in 1917 before Obama’s change. Trump aims to honor McKinley by reinstating the original name.
“They took his name off Mount McKinley, that’s what they do to people,” the president-elect told supporters at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix on Sunday, The Daily Beast reports.
“McKinley was a very good, maybe a great president,” Trump continued.
McKinley was the 25th president, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. Trump noted that he helped raise a “vast amount of money” to help pay for several projects, including the Panama Canal.

“That’s one of the reasons that we are going to bring back the name of Mount McKinley, because I think he deserves it. There are lots of things we can name but I think he deserves it. That’s not very gracious for somebody who did a great job,” Trump added, referring to Obama.
Republican Alaska senator Lisa Murkowski slammed Trump’s proposal, writing on X: “There is only one name worthy of North America’s tallest mountain: Denali – the Great One.”
Last week Trump threatened to reclaim the Panama Canal, with a senior Trump appointee making clear that “decades of U.S. commerce financing China’s growth and strategic footprint in the Americas is over.”
In a video posted to social media, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino responded to Trump’s threat.
“As president, I want to clearly state that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjoining zone is Panama’s and will remain so,” Mulino said Sunday, Politico reports. “The sovereignty and independence of our country is non-negotiable.”
Meanwhile, in a social media post, Trump noted that U.S. “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for national security and for “Freedom throughout the World.”
