*Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller “Sinners” made history at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, setting a new record as the most-awarded film by a Black director in the ceremony’s history.
As E! News reports, the film collected honors for Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson, and Best Original Screenplay for Coogler. Coogler’s screenplay victory marked the first time a Black writer has won in that category at the British ceremony. In total, “Sinners” earned 13 nominations, the highest number ever received by a film from a Black director.
Taking the stage to accept his award, Coogler admitted, “I didn’t expect that. This is nerve-racking.”
He also reflected on the people who shaped his journey, saying, “I come from a community that loves me. They made me believe that I could do this, that I could be a writer. And it was amazing to be accepted into the community of film actors, the community of Los Angeles.”
He added encouragement for fellow creatives: “For all the writers out there, when y’all look at that blank page, think of who you love, think of anybody who you’ve seen in pain that you identify with and wish they felt better, and let that love motivate you. I’ll be forever grateful for this, thank you all.”
“Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan, was released in 2025 and earned $368 million worldwide. The horror story collected 16 Oscar nominations, the highest total ever achieved by a single film at the Academy Awards. The milestone surpasses the long-standing record of 14 nominations held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.”
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event will air live on ABC and Hulu, with Conan O’Brien returning to host the show.
