“I want to make sure my audience can relate…,” said saxophonist Theresa Grayson about her new single “The Best is Yet to Come” from her recently released album “It’s All About You – Chapter 2” (Blacksmoke Music Worldwide). “I watch everyone…I noticed how the audience reacts to songs they know. For the album I chose songs that have significance…like Bishop Paul Morton, Sr.’s ‘Let it Rain’.”
The “The Best is Yet to Come” is a popular Donald Lawrence and The Tri-City Singers song, covered in the style or sax voice offered by the Grayson. The album title track, “It’s All About You” is a Theresa Grayson original.
“I listen to the melody and apply that to make it sing,” she said when praised her on how she makes her sax sing. “It’s ear training. You have to understand your instrument, technique and theory. It’s important to me, as an artist, to cover a song…bring it close to the original as possible.”
To master not only the sax and the techniques used to make it sing, but to master the theory of why the sax should be played in certain ways to get a certain sound is so impressive to me.
“Before I started this project I was invited to play and minister at church,” Theresa said when I asked her about being labeled a Gospel sax player. “I had to build my Gospel repertoire. I had R&B and Jazz. I chose music that uplifted not only me, but the church.”

I pointed out how beautiful the choir vocalists are on the album and Grayson said, “They are called Radical Praise. A praise team at my church, They are well trained. You will hear more from them…they’re my featured praise team.”
The “The Best is Yet to Come” single is also accompanied by a music video. Aside from the Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr.’s “Let It Rain” cover, Theresa Grayson’s album also includes Tasha Cobbs Leonard’s “Break Every Chain,” and VaShawn Mitchell’s “Nobody Greater.” Featured artists on the 10-track “It’s All About You – Chapter 2” album include Earnest Pugh, Wess Mortgan and Radical Praise.
“My first experience outside of the class was playing in church,” she pointed out as we continued talking about her being a Gospel sax player. “I was in a band in elementary school and at 11 years-old I wanted to play in church. My teacher encouraged me to go out there and play.”
“I learned to play what’s written (sheet music) in a big band and swing band,” Theresa said. “A lot of what I learn now is by ear. I not only play with other musicians, but I listened to them.”
Theresa Grayson, who is now a fluent sax player in Gospel, R&B, and Smooth Jazz, is on tour and you can see her in Houston, Texas August 29th, September 4th (Blacksmoke Live), November 7 (Mt Moriah Baptist), December 6 (Austin Baptist Church), and December 19th (Incarnate Word). www.TheresaGrayson.com
