*Veteran politician Barbara Lee has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the Oakland mayoral seat in the upcoming special election set for April 15, 2025.
With a rich legacy of public service rooted in the vibrant city of Oakland, Lee aims to address critical issues such as homelessness, public safety, and economic development, particularly in the wake of the recent recall of former Mayor Sheng Thao.
Born on July 16, 1946 (she’s 78), in El Paso, Texas, Lee’s trajectory was shaped by her early life experiences, including being born in a segregated hospital. Her resilience in the face of adversity became a theme that would define her career. The eldest of three daughters, Lee grew up under the guidance of her mother, Mildred Adaire, and her father, Garvin Alexander Tutt, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army.
Lee’s foray into politics began as a volunteer for Shirley Chisholm‘s groundbreaking presidential campaign in 1972. She later served as chief of staff to U.S. Representative Ron Dellums before launching her own political career. Over the years, Lee has held various positions, including stints in the California State Assembly from 1990 to 1996 and the State Senate from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she has served the 12th congressional district of California until the present day.

Known for her progressive stance, Lee made headlines when she cast the sole vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force after the September 11 attacks, advocating instead for diplomatic resolutions. Throughout her congressional tenure, she has fought tirelessly to secure critical funds for her community, including $15.8 million for community safety programs and $70.8 million for vital infrastructure improvements designed to uplift and support Oakland’s residents.
In light of the recent challenges faced by the city, Lee has expressed her commitment to fostering unity among the community.
“At this critical moment, we must not be a city divided, but a community united,” she asserted in her announcement, emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions to the pressing issues that Oakland faces.
Beyond her legislative successes, Lee’s personal narrative is equally compelling. Having overcome domestic violence and raised two sons as a single mother, her experiences provide her with a unique perspective on the challenges many Oakland residents encounter. This empathetic approach to leadership is reflected in her vision for the city, which prioritizes inclusion and support for those in need.
As Barbara Lee prepares for the challenging road ahead, her candidacy signifies not only a continuation of her public service legacy but also a beacon of hope for the residents of Oakland looking for a strong, experienced leader to guide them toward a brighter future.
