*Kamala Harris emerged as the leading candidate in a new poll regarding the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, even though she experienced a loss to Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
According to Morning Consult’s recent survey, 36% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters supported the former vice president. This poll comes as many are speculating about potential contenders for the 2028 race, with Harris appearing to maintain a solid base of support, The Independent reports.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive firebrand from New York, placed third in the poll, securing just 5% of the vote. She tied in third place was Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Also sharing this spot was California Governor Gavin Newsom. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg followed at 10%, with figures like billionaire Mark Cuban and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro securing smaller portions of the vote. Meanwhile, 13%, indicated they had no opinion or were unsure about who to support.
Some Democratic donors are uncertain about the upcoming election cycle and hesitant to back any candidates at this point. Many have expressed concerns about the lack of enthusiasm among the base, which might make fundraising difficult for any potential nominee.
“I don’t know if I would get involved at this point even if God were running,” Democratic fundraiser Michael Kempner told ABC News. “I think it’s going to be tough for any Democrat to raise any money. There is little enthusiasm.”

One donor told the outlet that the country will likely shift in a more conservative direction by 2028.
“I think the country will not have moved in a progressive direction during that time, it will have become more conservative,” the person, who remained anonymous, told the outlet, noting that Harris is “done.”
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Harris needs to decide ‘now’ whether she will run for office.
“The challenges are too big. We deserve a real conversation,” Villaraigosa said. “We had a 100-day campaign. So no, you can’t get in at the end of the rainbow. Get in now.”
In the meantime, reports indicate Harris could be considering a run for governor of California. Sources suggest she has set a deadline to decide by the end of the summer.
“I would think running for governor, running the 5th largest economy in the world, would be a good move. It’s not my decision … it’s all hers. But I think it’s a wonderful step,” Lawyer Judith Barnett told ABC News.
“My opinion and my dedication to her hasn’t changed one iota. I believe she’s one of the most talented, brilliant, kind, empathic people that I have met in all my time in politics,” Barnett said.
“If she wants to run for governor, I don’t think the Katie Porter’s of the world are formidable,” said Bakari Sellers, former co-chair of Harris’ 2020 campaign.” I think if she wants to run for president, she has to ask: is the country ready for her? I don’t know the answer to that. … a lot of things are going to change in the next three and a half years.”
