*Many pet owners go above and beyond to spoil their pets but neglect to clean their pet’s bowls. Pets can be exposed to harmful bacteria, mold, and other health risks if this routine chore is ignored.
As Better Homes & Gardens reports, pet food and water bowls should be washed daily to prevent bacteria buildup. According to Dr. Michael Hyder, DVM, Medical Director at Veterinary Emergency Group in Palo Alto, these bowls can become “a breeding ground for infections that may lead to illness.”
Harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli can cause serious digestive problems, while mold growth can lead to toxicity and other complications. To simplify the process, Dr. Hyder suggests keeping two sets of bowls and rotating them, so there’s always a clean one available.
What Happens If You Don’t Clean Pet Bowls?
Failing to wash your pet’s bowls regularly can have serious consequences. Salmonella and E. coli exposure can result in vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and lethargy. Additionally, mold—especially black mold—can be extremely dangerous.
“Mold spores and mycotoxins can cause neurological symptoms, tremors, loss of coordination, and respiratory issues in pets,” explains Dr. Hyder. Severe cases may require emergency medical intervention, including IV fluids and seizure medications.
Dirty bowls also contribute to dental disease. Dr. Lindsay Cassibry, in-house veterinarian at pet food company Ollie, warns that bacteria buildup from saliva can lead to plaque, tartar, and gum infections over time.

Cleaning Considerations for Multi-Pet Homes
If you have multiple pets, it’s essential to clean their bowls regularly and avoid sharing.
“If your pets have different dietary needs or medical conditions, sharing bowls can lead to cross-contamination or spread of infections,” warns Dr. Cassibry. If a pet is sick, keep their bowls separate until they fully recover.
Best Practices for Cleaning Pet Bowls
- Food bowls: Wash daily with hot, soapy water using pet-safe dish soap. Stainless steel and ceramic bowls can be placed in the dishwasher for extra sanitation.
- Water bowls: Should be cleaned at least eery other day, but daily washing is ideal.
- Dry food bowls: Despite kibble being less messy than wet food, oils and crumbs attract bacteria, so daily cleaning is still necessary.
- Wet food bowls: Must be washed after every meal to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth.
