*Oprah Winfrey threw a surprise 70th birthday party for her best friend Gayle King and shared a video of the celebration on social media.
The Instagram video shows the moment the two media moguls walked into the celebration, and King’s shocked reaction—dropping her purse in surprise. The guests, including celebrities like Robert De Niro and Tina Knowles, cheered and sang “Happy Birthday” as King was overwhelmed by the love.
“My bestie of 50 years is turning 70 so we gathered everyone that loved her to celebrate,” Winfrey wrote in the caption of the video. “Hard thing to surprise her, O the stories we have made up, the lies we have told to keep this a secret.”
She added, “Happy birthday @gayleking, sorry we almost gave you a heart attack?.”

King turns 70 on December 28, while Winfrey celebrated her 70th birthday earlier this year on January 29, marking the milestone with a run on the beach.
“Celebrating 70 with a run on the beach. #healthisthebestgift,” she captioned a video post. “Thank you for all the birthday love.”
At the time, King posted a video on X/Twitter of Winfrey with King’s grandson during a holiday getaway.
“While Favorite grandson Luca is too young to understand how special this moment was during Christmas vacation, it’s not lost on me,” King captioned the post. She also revealed how Oprah wanted to celebrate her birthday.
King added, “When asked how she wanted to spend her birthday, she said, ‘No gifts, no parties, no surprises!’ Her preference was to sit by the fire with a good book and savor the fragrance of her life! Happy birthday Oprah!!”
