In related news, Hearst has tapped Samira Nasr to be the first Black editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, New York Post reports.

Nasr, originally from Montreal, joins the company as industry leaders claiming to be riding with #TeamDiversity hires Black faces amid nationwide protests over racially biased policing.

“As the proud daughter of a Lebanese father and Trinidadian mother, my world view is expansive and is anchored in the belief that representation matters,” Nasr said in a video announcing her new gig. “My lens by nature is colorful and so it is important to me to begin a new chapter in Bazaar’s history by shining a light on all individuals who I believe are the inspiring voices of our time. I will work to give all voices a platform to tell stories that would never have been told.”

Speaking of Black folks being tapped to occupy white spaces, Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian recently announced that he is stepping down as a board member for the company he co-founded, Reddit, and he wants a Black person to replace him.

In an Instagram video, Ohanian said, “I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his Black daughter when she asks, ‘What did you do?’ So I have resigned as a member of the Reddit board. I’ve urged them to fill my seat with a Black candidate and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the Black community, chiefly to curb racial hate. And I’m starting with a pledge of $1 million to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp. I believe stepping down can actually be an act of leadership for people in power right now. For everyone fighting to fix our broken nation, do not stop.”

As reported by MadameNoire, in a follow-up message, Alexis and Serena made clear that his decision was not made at her urging. “A lot of people might think I told you to do something, or I forced you —He doesn’t listen to me, ever,” Williams said.
