*Kenyan governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is under fire after including bottles of Hennessy in COVID-19 care packages.

In addition to traditional food items, the flamboyant politician distributed bottles of cognac to the poor, claiming it protects against the deadly contagion, though the company has called on him to stop propagating a myth, Complex reports.

“We are giving some small bottles of Hennessey in the food packs that we are giving to our people,” Sonko said in a video, wearing a face mask and shield.

“From the research which has been conducted by the World Health Organisation and various health organisations … alcohol plays a very major role in killing the coronavirus or any sort of virus.”

Sonlo believes the alcohol is a “throat sanitizer.”

“I think from the research conducted by the World Health Organization and various organizations, it has been believed that alcohol plays a major role in killing the coronavirus,” Sonko said in a video (see below).

One Twitter user responded to the clip above with, “For the born again holy saints who are wondering what’s Hennessy,,,,it’s a form of sanitizer that is only effective if taken orally it cleanses even sins and any other microorganism in the body.”

However, the WHO said that alcohol will not protect you against coronavirus but will actually compromise the immune system, making people more susceptible to catching the virus.

“Hennessy would like to stress that the consumption of our brand or any other alcoholic beverage does not protect against the virus,” the company said in a statement.

Kenya reportedly has 225 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 disease so far.

Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has cautioned politicians against using the pandemic for publicity stunts such as this.

“We should not politicize this and do these things looking at the forthcoming election,” he said.

“This is the life and the health of our people.”
