Black Skincare: Our Top 5 Tips

*Everyone is different, and so is everyone’s skin.

The skin of Black folks contains more melanin than those with lighter skin. Cells that produce more melanin are known to be more prone to injury and inflammation. Believe it or not – this will make impurities on dark skin more visible than they would be on lighter skin. Due to the variances of skin functions and structure, people have been able to come up with tailor-made tips for Black skincare.

We sifted through all of them and came up with our own list of top 5 tips for Black skincare. Here they are:

Tip #1: Daily Cleansing and Moisturizing

To keep your skin supple and bright at all times, you need to cleanse and moisturize daily. Ideally, this should be done right after showering and try using gentle products. Look for skincare products that claim to be ‘noncomedogenic’.

Tip #2: Wear Sunscreen

One of the biggest myths about Black beauty has been the fact that our skin can’t burn. Well, this is quite untrue, and sun exposure is known to cause dark spots on Black skin as well. What’s even worse is that exposure to the sun without sunscreen can make existing spots appear darker than before.

Tip #3: Consider Treatment for Hyperpigmentation

We’re talking about skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation can affect all kinds of skin tones – not just Black skin. Now sunscreen can prevent from new discolored patches from occurring but it won’t get rid of those spots that occurred naturally. In order to reduce these dark spots, you need specialized products that consist of any of the following:

  1. Vitamin C
  2. Kojic Acid
  3. Hydroquinone
  4. Retinoids

Tip #4: Treat Acne Before It Occurs

You may catch an acne outbreak from occurring or from getting worse if your treat it early. All you need to do is establish a gentle Black skincare routine, and this could be as simple as using oil-free or noncomedogenic products. If you don’t treat them early on, these acne spots could turn into the dark spots we were talking about earlier.

If you think things are getting out of hand, don’t wait around and book an appointment with your dermatologist. Your acne may be a result of heavily perfumed skincare products or even scented laundry detergents.

Tip #5: Plan a Balanced Diet

“Personal health is related to self-control and to the worship of life in all its natural beauty – self-control bringing with it happiness, renewed youth, and long life.” – Maria Montessori

A rich and healthy diet for your skin will include:

  1. Healthy fats, including olive oil, avocados, and nuts
  2. Lean protein sources including tofu, legumes, eggs, and fish
  3. Whole grains
  4. Fruits and vegetables

You can achieve good skin through diet. All you need to do is give your body the right kind and amount of nutrients and you will witness it repair itself.
