‘Remarkable Rise of So So Def’ Exclusive Clip – How Biggie Looked Out for Jermaine Dupri [WATCH]

*We have an exclusive clip from the upcoming WE tv documentary “Power, Influence and Hip-Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def,” premiering TONIGHT Thursday, July 18 at 10pm, which focuses on the prolific career of hip hop mogul and legendary producer Jermaine Dupri and his influence on music over the last 25 years.

“The documentary special explores the prolific career of hip hop mogul and legendary producer Jermaine Dupri and features never-before-seen archival footage and original interviews with Dupri’s contemporaries including Mariah Carey, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Will.I.Am, Da Brat, Bow Wow and Nelly,” according to the press release.

This one-hour special explores the unique stories that make up the history of So So Def, one of the very few black owned labels, from its humble beginnings to multi-platinum success and stardom.

When asked what he wants people to learn about him from watching this special, Dupri tells the ajc.com: “I want people to know more about Jermaine Dupri. Everything you see me do, these are connected pieces. People look at it like, they used Snoop (for an interview) because he’s colorful, but Snoop gave me Bow Wow. We had a relationship through an artist, so there’s such a bigger connection to things going on. We see a lot of people in this industry that try to connect dots that don’t really exist.”

On collaborating with WE TV on the project, JD said: “I talked to WE (tv) about a documentary, and we filmed the Atlanta (So So Def anniversary) concert, and I knew the concert was going to be a great backdrop. But when I watch this documentary, I’m like, where is the footage from the concert? It doesn’t show a lot of the artists from the show or the dynamic of one person being able to have a concert with that many artists. I just feel like I need to more time (in a documentary). I feel like it’s set up for more, like maybe a movie.”

In the clip above, Dupri recalls his bond with late-great Notorious BIG and how the rapper had his back on the night he was gunned down in the streets of Los Angeles — scroll up and watch the YouTube video to hear Jermaine tell it.
