*White folks seem to have a disturbing love affair with Blackface, according to The Huff Post, which notes the disturbing new phenomenon of Digital Blackface in the tech space.

Digital Blackface is the practice of non-black folks claiming “black identity through social media sites and technology.”

“It involves using a fictional blackface to promote stereotypes and images that are desired by non-black individuals.”

In recent years, there have been various forms of digital blackface within social media apps, parody accounts, and memes.

Below are the Top Three Types of Digital Blackface, as outlined by The Huff Post.

Mobile Apps And Digital BlackFace

The popular messaging app Snapchat came under fire on April 20th (4/20) for Digital Blackface. This allows users to transform their selfies into a black-skinned version of Bob Marley. The day 4/20 is universally known as the marijuana holiday around the world. Police officers used the radio code 420 to label people who were violating the law by consuming marijuana.”

Snapchat responded to the criticism over the app by noting that they worked out an agreement with the Bob Marley estate to use the filter.

Face Swap Live is another app that allows users to mock black people — because apparently, this is something non-blacks yearn to do in their spare time.

Parody And Digital Blackface

Digital Blackface is prevalent in twitter parody accounts. Non-blacks create fake profile pics to tweet what they deem as humorous tweets regarding their perception of black behavior. Accounts such as infamous user @TheSaintNegro29 and pages like Things Black Folks Like or BlackPeopleProbs are just a few examples of parody accounts created by no black individuals.

Memes And Digital BlackFace

Sites and apps such as Quicklime allow users to engage in Digital Blackface. Meme Generator is another site that has a collection of 19th-century blackface style memes. Users can place their caption over the blackface and upload it to their social media site to share.
