*Love! It’s pure. It’s genuine and as this OWN docu-series “Black Love,” enters it’s second season, it’s normalizing that black people love, just like everyone else loves. We love with all of our hearts. We have stories and journeys that we’ve experienced and we deal with trials and tribulations like any other relationship or married couple.

On May 28, 2018 Blacklove.com and Hollywood Confidential presented “Black Love: Clips & Conversations” to a jam packed audience at the Montalban Theatre, in Los Angeles, California. What Tommy Oliver and Codie Elaine Oliver have created, is a platform where the world is able to see that “Black Love” exists outside of stereotypes, cultural expectations and beyond reality hype and myths. It is honest, open and authentic.

This second season consists of an all-star, award winning line up of couples, including: Emmy award-winning star of This Is Us, Sterling K. Brown and his wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bathe; Jane The Virgin star, Alono Miller and his talented, She’s Gotta Have It, wife, DeWanda Wise; Claws star, Niecy Nash and her husband Jay Tucker; Tina Knowles-Lawson and husband Richard Lawson; Basketball legend, Grant Hill and his wife Tamia; Kirk Franklin and wife Tammy; Former NFL running back, Eddie George and his talented, SWV, wife Taj and former Detroit Lions Wide Receiver, Devale Ellis and his wife Khadeen. The list of amazing black couples doesn’t end there, this second season. We will also see appearances from RUN DMC’s, Rev Run and his wife Justine Simmons, King of Comedy, D.L. From “Clips & Conversation,” we learned that ‘Love” is not easy to talk about, but it’s necessary, in today’s climate. We learned from Devale and his wife Khadeen, that through ups and downs, it’s a partnership, where one has to be able to be open, direct and honest. Devale shared how he would not have made it through his struggle with addiction and his lowest point in life, had it not been for the support of his wife.

Tommy and Codie Oliver talked about work/home balance and how to separate the two in a marriage when you are a couple that are not only married, but also, business partners, creatives and entrepreneurs. We also learned that Codie is expecting! Congrats to them on their baby news and upcoming bundle of joy!

From Sterling and Ryan, we learned about “giving grace” in your relationships/marriage and learning your partner’s love style. Ryan loves surprises. Sterling, not so much. Sterling is, frugal and Ryan believes it’s ok to treat yourself once in awhile. They’ve learned over the years, to balance out what works for them.

The common thread with all of the couples from the “Clips & Conversation” event, is the clear idea that all of these couples are “BEST FRIENDS”. They’ve built their relationships on this, on trust, on communication, on shared goals and love. They keep their relationships first and remind us that relationships are evolving…always!

“Clips & Conversation” also had words of wisdom for the singles out there who want to be married. First, stop saying that “thing” that blocks your blessing. You don’t know where your soul mate is coming from, what he/she looks like, how he/she will present themselves, so perhaps stop saying “It won’t happen for me” or “Los Angeles is hard to date in” and “I don’t look like the typical LA person…” Full stop!! Change your narrative. Change your thoughts and create space for what you truly want. It can happen. It will happen!

All-in-all, we are in for an amazing second season of inspirational black marriages on Black Love. These couples open up and share with us, what it takes to make a relationship/marriage work. From how it all began, getting to “I do”, communication, love styles, arguments, accountability and raising children. We will learn from them. We will hear about their relationships and we will celebrate “Black Love”!

Catch the second season of “Black Love” on OWN, Saturdays at 10/9c.
