*Charlotte Police have released audio of a 911 call from the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, as well as recordings of officers’ radio traffic at the scene.
Scott, 43, was fatally shot on Sept. 20 at an apartment complex by Officer Brentley Vinson, igniting protests in downtown Charlotte that turned violent. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Officers were at the scene in plainclothes, but wearing vests with “police” written on them, to serve a warrant on another person when they say they spotted Scott in his truck. Police claim Scott was armed with a handgun and did not listen to commands from officers to drop the gun before he was shot. Video from police dashboard and body cameras and video recorded by Scott’s wife were previously released.
The 911 call came from a man at the scene, who was asking for a medic following the shooting:
In audio from Metro police officers at the scene at 3:47 p.m., an officer says, “Roll back to this apartment complex behind you, there was a guy who was parked next to us who was rolling a joint and had a gun. … Take your first right, we are back here in this other visitor parking.”
In audio from University City dispatch at 3:52 p.m., an officer says, “we got shots fired, one suspect down, Legacy Court … All officers are 10-4, we’ve got one suspect down.”
