*Monday’s episode of “The Late Show with David Letterman” featuring President Barack Obama as a guest drew the show’s best Nielsen metered-market overnight ratings since September 2012, when another Obama appearance averaged a 4.0/10.
The president is among a number of special guests returning for one last visit before Letterman signs off for good on Wednesday, May 20, capping 22 years in the chair.
First Lady Michelle Obama was a guest last week, mostly to talk about her veterans’ initiative Joining Forces. Her husband, in his eighth appearance on the program, teased Letterman for preferring FLOTUS to him
“It’s okay … I assure you, you are not alone,” he told Dave.
The president also said he wouldn’t mind playing Letterman in a game of dominos after they are both retired:
Addressing Baltimore for the first time since six officers were charged Friday in Freddy Gray’s in-custody death, Obama said the matter is now in the hands of the legal system and that the officers deserve a fair trial.
However, he spent the next 10 minutes enlightening Letterman and the audience on racial injustice and the underlying origins of distrust between the police and minority communities.
After discussing Baltimore, Letterman tried to lighten the mood. The night’s Top 10 was “Questions Dumb Guys Ask the President,” and Letterman tried one out on Obama:
“Is this the first country you have presidented?” Letterman asked.
Obama’s farewell to Letterman: “We’ve grown up with you,” he said. “You’re part of all of us. You’ve given us a great gift, and we love you.”
