*Somewhere buried beneath the rubble and debris of “Empire’s” ratings explosion is the show’s 8 p.m. Wednesday lead in, “American Idol” – steadily losing viewers, but keeping enough tuned in to remain on air.

Perhaps no one is aware that an unprecedented seven African Americans are in line for the top 12 tonight. Had Savion Wright not been eliminated last week, it would’ve been eight.

Among the boys, Rayvon Owen (23, of Richmond, VA), Quaasim Middleton (22, of Jasper, TX) and Quentin Alexander (20, of New Orleans) are looking to make it to the next round.

“Making it to this point, I definitely feel like we obviously have the drive and in order to make it to the next point, all we need to do is keep up that drive and keep the momentum,” says Quentin. “We just have to stay hungry for it.”

Sarina-Joi Crowe (19, of Columbia, TN), Loren Lott (22, of San Diego), Adanna Duru (18, of Diamond Bar, CA) and Tyanna Jones (16, of Jacksonville, FL), are among the ladies looking to make the top 12.

Below, Tyanna tells us how she and her co-contestants have grown through the audition process:

“American Idol” airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
