*Social Security is packed with rules, and while most people understand the basics, like eligibility starting at 62, several lesser-known regulations can significantly affect your benefits. Here are 3 overlooked rules that all retirees need to know in 2025, via The Motley Fool:
1. Claiming Spousal Benefits Without a Work Record
Even without a long work history, you may still qualify for Social Security through your spouse. If you’re married or even divorced, you can receive up to 50% of your current or former spouse’s benefit, provided they’ve filed. However, timing is crucial. If you apply before your full retirement age, your monthly payment will be reduced. And while delaying your benefits can boost payouts thanks to delayed credits, this perk doesn’t apply to spousal benefits. So once you hit full retirement age, there’s no advantage in waiting.
2. You Can Reverse an Early Claim—But Only Once
Filed early and regret it? There’s a one-time do-over available. You have 12 months to withdraw your application and must repay every dollar received so far. If you manage that, you’ll be eligible to reapply later, which could result in a larger monthly benefit. This option won’t fit everyone’s financial situation, but it can be a powerful tool if you change your retirement timeline.

3. Working While Collecting? Watch the Income Limits
It’s perfectly legal to work and collect Social Security, but if you’re under full retirement age, your earnings could reduce your benefits. For 2025, earning more than $23,400 will cause Social Security to withhold $1 for every $2 over that limit. If you’re reaching full retirement age that year, the cap increases to $62,160, and the penalty drops to $1 for every $3 earned beyond that.
Social Security may look straightforward on the surface, but the fine print can have a major financial impact. Whether you’re nearing retirement or already receiving checks, understanding these lesser-known rules can help you make smarter decisions.
