*At a recent concert in Cardiff, Wales, on July 9, music icon Stevie Wonder addressed persistent rumors questioning his blindness.
The 25-time Grammy winner spoke candidly to the audience about his condition, emphasizing its profound impact. “You know the truth. The truth is, shortly after my birth I became blind,” he said, per Live Fox Now. “That was a blessing because it allowed me to see the world in a vision of truth, of sight, see people in the spirit of them, not how they look, not what color they are, but what color is their spirit.”
Wonder’s remarks come amid years of online speculation, often amplified by his public appearances. Over the years, celebrities like Anthony Anderson and Shaquille O’Neal have fueled the speculation with humorous anecdotes. In 2016, Anderson joked on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” saying, “What y’all don’t know is, Stevie can see,” while recounting a basketball challenge.
Similarly, O’Neal claimed in 2019 on “Inside the NBA” that Wonder recognized him in an elevator, recalling, “What’s up, Shaq? How you doing, big dog?”
“[He] presses the button. Get’s off on his floor. Goes to his room. I went and called every person I knew and told them the story,” the retired NBA star recalled.
Despite the jests, Wonder has consistently addressed his blindness with grace and humor. In the 2024 audiobook series “The Wonder of Stevie,” he shared how his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, struggled with his diagnosis, crying “every night.” Young Stevie reassured her, saying, “Mama, you shouldn’t cry, you’re making my head hurt,” and added, “Maybe God has something for me that’s bigger than all this.”
Reflecting on his upbringing in a 2004 interview with O, The Oprah Magazine, he described developing “facial radar” to sense objects, crediting his mother’s encouragement. “She knew I had to learn — and the more she allowed me to do, the more she could let go,” he said.
Wonder’s positivity shone through in Cardiff as he shared a recent prayer: “I want to see the world so I can walk around the world and see things and let people see how blind they have been.”
