*Mia Love, the trailblazing former U.S. Representative from Utah, passed away on Sunday at the age of 49.
Love, who made history as the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, had been undergoing treatment for brain cancer. Her family confirmed her passing in a statement shared in a post on her X account.
“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” the post began. “She was in her home surrounded by family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward.”
“We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come,” the post concluded.

In 2022, Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. She had been receiving immunotherapy in a clinical trial at Duke University, but earlier this month, her daughter revealed that the treatment was no longer effective. Love died at home in Saratoga Springs, Utah, PEOPLE reports.
Love first entered the political spotlight in 2012 when she ran for a congressional seat but narrowly lost to Democratic incumbent Jim Matheson. She made a successful comeback in 2014, defeating Doug Owens and securing her place in the U.S. House of Representatives. Following her victory, she noted that she had defied expectations as a Black, Republican, and Mormon woman in a predominantly white state. Love served two terms in the House of Representatives. During her 2018 reelection campaign, she lost her seat to Democrat Ben McAdams by fewer than 700 votes. A daughter of Haitian immigrants, Love’s defeat was a significant loss for the GOP.
Love’s passing comes after her March 11, 2025, announcement that her cancer was no longer responding to treatment. In an open letter published by Deseret News, she shared that she and her family had “shifted our focus from treatments to enjoying every moment and making memories with the time we have.”

“We are not certain how long this season of my battle will be and I do want to share, and reshare, some things with the world that I passionately believe. I write all of this as my ‘living wish’ and hopefully ‘enduring wish’ for you,” she wrote.
“As a mayor, member of Congress and media commentator I have seen the worst of petty politics, divisive rhetoric and disappointing lapses of moral character by some,” Love continued. “These same roles also provided me a front row seat and backstage pass to be blessed and inspired by the courage, vision and hope of America’s finest daughters, sons and citizens.”
Love is survived by her husband, Jason, and their three children.
