*Tyler Perry, one of the most successful producers in television and film, has long navigated the complex intersection of commercial success and critical reception. While his latest Netflix title, “The Six Triple Eight,” has garnered positive reviews, Perry revealed in an interview with The Times of London that he has not sought out a critic’s opinion on his work for nearly 20 years.
“I’m very clear and intentional on the stories that I’m telling. I’m not spending the money for you to tear it apart,” he stated, emphasizing that his narratives resonate with the audience rather than critics. Perry noted that at least 25 of his projects have been held back from review, insisting, “The audience gets it. So let’s look at what they say.”
Perry also underscored his commitment to authorship by writing all his material solo and insisting on a “no-edits” condition from networks.
“You’ve hired me to speak to my audience, then you have to let me do that,” he explained, referring to his ongoing partnerships with Amazon Studios, Paramount, and Netflix.
In a more somber context, Perry has recently faced personal tragedy with the untimely death of Steve Mensch, the President and Manager of General Operations at Tyler Perry Studios. Mensch was killed in a plane crash in Homosassa, Florida while piloting a single-seater aircraft. He was 62 years old and leaves behind a wife and three children.
Perry expressed his deep sorrow over this loss, particularly as it coincides with the anniversary of his mother’s passing. “This time of year, grief meets me like an unwanted visitor,” Perry shared, reflecting on the personal weight of the loss and the impact Mensch had on the studio.
In a heartfelt tribute, he remarked, “Life is but a moment; we are like vapors. Hold strong to the people you love AND TELL THEM!”
The mourning for Mensch resonated across Perry’s team, with the studio imploring its community to remember the incredible contributions Mensch made during his eight years on the team. “It is hard to imagine not seeing him smiling throughout the halls. We will miss him dearly,” read the official studio statement, extending heartfelt condolences to Mensch’s family.
As Perry continues to produce stories that resonate deeply with audiences, he remains committed not only to his craft but also to honoring the relationships and moments that shape life itself.
