*Spelman College graduates Kelli M. Coleman and Anika J. Odegbo, founders of The TEN, Detroit’s first modern nail bar, launched the business in 2016 with a shared goal of building wealth.
According to AfroTech, The TEN offers various services, including manicures, pedicures, brow shaping, and waxing, with complimentary champagne for adult customers. They also offer a $150 monthly membership for two manicures and pedicures, its website mentions.
“So, Anika and I are friends and Spelman sisters. We ultimately met when we found out that both of us intended to attend. We decided to room together, and the rest is history, as they say,” Coleman told the Michigan Chronicle.
“Both Detroit natives, I grew up in Southfield, and Anika grew up in Detroit proper. We come from entrepreneurial families; we really understand the power of entrepreneurship to create generational wealth,” she continued.
“It was always our respective goals to own businesses of our own in addition to carrying on our family’s entrepreneurial legacy. That’s sort of the origin of how we know each other, and that’s how The TEN came to be,” Coleman explained.

The nail bar supports both employees and business owners through mentorship programs.
Looking to expand, Coleman and Odegbo plan to franchise nationwide by Winter 2025.
“What started 8 years ago in Detroit as a dream to redefine nail care has grown into a movement—and now, it’s time to share the blueprint for success and EMPOWER others through entrepreneurship and ownership,” Coleman wrote on Instagram.
“Scaling The TEN was always the goal—not just for growth but to uplift and inspire others to chase their dreams, too… We’ve got a long road ahead, but this is a major step forward—and we’re so grateful for the love and support that has carried us this far,” she added.
