*Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk is heading into a federal murder-for-hire trial Monday in Los Angeles, where prosecutors plan to use portions of his own music and videos as evidence in a case that could send him to prison for life.
The 16-person panel — 12 jurors and four alternates — was seated after two days of questioning that repeatedly returned to one unusual issue: rap music.
Potential jurors were asked whether gangsta rap carried negative associations for them and whether violent lyrics could affect their ability to judge the case fairly. One woman said the genre suggested violence to her, while another acknowledged negative associations. Another prospective juror said she might need subtitles to understand some lyrics.
Opening statements are expected Monday in U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald’s courtroom, with the trial projected to last three weeks or longer, KESQ reported.
Prosecutors Say Durk Ordered a Hit
Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, has pleaded not guilty.
Federal prosecutors allege he placed a bounty on rapper Quando Rondo, whose legal name is Tyquian Bowman, following the 2020 killing of Durk’s close friend and OTF associate King Von.
According to the Justice Department, several people associated with Durk’s Only the Family collective allegedly traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles in August 2022 and tracked Bowman before gunmen opened fire near the Beverly Center.
Bowman survived. His cousin Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson was killed.
The government alleges at least 18 rounds were fired at Bowman’s vehicle and contends OTF-related money helped finance the alleged murder-for-hire plot. Durk denies arranging the attack.

His Music Is Going Before the Jury
The cultural flashpoint may be what prosecutors intend to show jurors alongside more conventional evidence.
Fitzgerald has allowed the government to introduce Durk’s 2021 “Pissed Me Off” music video and lyrics. Prosecutors contend the material helps establish Durk’s desire to retaliate for King Von’s death. Durk’s attorneys fought its admission, arguing that using the song risks unfair prejudice and that artistic expression should not be treated as a literal confession.
AllHipHop reports that prosecutors also plan to rely on other music-related material as they present their case.
Durk’s defense has separately sought expert testimony addressing drill rap, Chicago gang culture and the distinction between artistic performance and real-world conduct.
That makes the questions asked during jury selection especially significant: attorneys were essentially screening for whether jurors could hear violent lyrics without automatically concluding that the person performing them committed violent crimes.
Jury Selection Exposed the Challenge
The process offered an early glimpse of how difficult that distinction may be.
One prospective juror was removed after saying the defendants looked guilty before hearing any evidence, according to AllHipHop’s courtroom coverage. Jury selection ultimately concluded Friday after the court worked through a pool that initially numbered roughly 80 people.
The defense’s concern is straightforward: lyrics created as entertainment can sound very different when displayed on a screen inside a federal courtroom.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, will argue that selected material is relevant because of its connection to the alleged motive and circumstances surrounding the case.
The jury will have to decide what weight, if any, that music deserves alongside witness testimony, digital evidence and the government’s other exhibits.
Durk Faces the Fight of His Life
Durk was arrested in October 2024 near Miami International Airport. Federal authorities said at the time that he was attempting to leave the United States; that claim remains the government’s characterization of his actions, not a proven finding about his intent.
He faces federal charges tied to the alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy, stalking and firearms offenses. AllHipHop reports that conviction on all counts could result in a mandatory life sentence.
Monday’s opening statements will move the case from years of filings, motions and accusations into the hands of a jury.
And for Lil Durk, the stakes extend beyond whether prosecutors can prove he orchestrated a killing.
Jurors will also be asked to decide whether pieces of the music that helped make him famous tell them anything meaningful about what happened outside the studio.
