Recent studies connect the soft drink to serious medical conditions such as fatty liver disease, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, according to The Telegraph. One investigation published in Nature Medicine traced millions of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease diagnoses directly to sugar-based beverages. Swedish researchers are explicitly blaming the sugary drink industry for cardiovascular disease cases.
Consuming a can of regular Coca-Cola triggers an immediate sugar spike in your body during the first hour. The combination of caffeine and sugar can lead to a “degree of dependence,” per the Telegraph, causing regular drinkers to need gradual reduction to “lessen the effects of the caffeine and sugar withdrawal.”
“Coke is just through the roof [for sugar],” specialist registered dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine told the Telegraph. “In my opinion, it shouldn’t be allowed to be sold.”
Environmental issues compound these health worries. According to The Cool Down, Coca-Cola ranks as the world’s leading producer of branded plastic waste. Despite some corporate efforts to address this problem, substantial improvements remain necessary.
Scientists continue examining the lasting effects of soda consumption, building an expanding body of research that highlights the dangers. Medical professionals recommend decreasing soda intake and substituting healthier options like fizzy water instead of reaching for that Coca-Cola can.
