*Barack Obama was reportedly invited to a round of golf by Donald Trump while seated next to him at Jimmy Carter’s funeral in January,
According to “2024,” a new book by Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf, Trump tried to lure Obama into the game by touting his “courses around the world,” per Axios.
The moment between the two men quickly went viral earlier this year. Footage from the funeral showed them speaking and even laughing, prompting a wave of speculation about what was said.
“It did look very friendly, I must say,” Trump later told reporters. “I didn’t realize how friendly it looked. I saw it on your wonderful network just a little while ago before I came in and I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.’”
Trump added, “And we probably do. We have a little different philosophies, right? But we probably do. I don’t know. We just got along.”
As we reported earlier, the funeral services brought together five former U.S. presidents: George W. Bush, Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, President-elect Donald Trump, and Barack Obama. These leaders represented a different era of American politics, yet the day revealed an unexpected harmony between Trump and Obama.
During the service, footage captured the two men engaged in animated conversation, sharing laughter and pleasantries—an interaction that drew significant attention on social media. The images and videos showcased a rare moment devoid of the usual political animosity, prompting a wave of reactions online.
Despite the brief moment of civility, Trump mocked the exchange by posting a doctored version of the footage on his Truth Social platform.
Obama has not commented publicly on the conversation or Trump’s golf invitation. The exchange comes years after Trump promoted the false “birther” conspiracy theory questioning Obama’s citizenship.
