*A groundbreaking reimagining of H.G. Wells’ iconic novel, “War of the Worlds,” arrives on Prime Video globally on July 30. Directed by Rich Lee, this indie sci-fi thriller stars Ice Cube as Will Radford, a Homeland Security cyber-analyst who monitors threats via a vast surveillance network. When an enigmatic attack disrupts his world, Radford begins to suspect a government cover-up with global implications.
As Deadline reports, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Andrea Savage, Henry Hunter Hall, Iman Benson, Devon Bostick, and Michael O’Neill. Written by Kenneth Golde and Marc Hyman, and edited by Charles Ancelle, the movie is produced by Patrick Aiello and Timur Bekmambetov, with Adam Sidman as executive producer.
“The idea was organic,” says Aiello. “When catastrophes happen today, we experience them through our devices. That insight shaped the storytelling and tech used to create this immersive thriller.”
The production leverages a unique format, immersing viewers in the action through the perspectives of phones, computers, and tablets, mimicking how modern audiences consume real-world events. On X, one user wrote, “Not Ice Cube fighting aliens on Zoom ?”.

Bekmambetov emphasizes the contemporary relevance of the approach. “It’ll be exciting for audiences to watch the movie and ask themselves: If aliens invaded today, how would we experience it? Most likely, we’d be watching it on our phones,” he says. He draws a parallel to Orson Welles’ radio broadcast, which used the dominant medium of its era to create a sense of real-time invasion.
This innovative storytelling, dubbed Screenlife, places viewers directly in the narrative, offering a visceral, first-person experience. “For the first time ever, a studio-scale sci-fi epic has been produced using a format that places audiences inside the action through the lenses of phones, computers, and tablets,” Aiello explains. The result is a fresh take on a classic tale, designed to resonate with today’s tech-driven world.
