Aaron Dean: Fort Worth Officer Resigns After Fatally Shooting Atatiana Jefferson Insider Her Home

*The Fort Worth police officer who fatally shot Atatiana Jefferson in her home while she played video games with her 8-year-old nephew was allowed to resign from the force instead of being fired, and could still face criminal charges, the interim police chief said Monday.

Aaron Dean, who is white, would have been fired but was dishonorably discharged from the department. The U.S. Justice Department will examine the case for possible civil rights violations, per USA Today

We previously reported… Dean shot 28-year-old Jefferson through her bedroom window early Saturday morning while responding to a welfare check, and he “didn’t have time to perceive a threat” before opening fire, the family’s attorney, Lee Merritt, said.

Bodycam video released by FWPD shows two officers searching the outside of the home with flashlights before one shouts, “Put your hands up, show me your hands.” The officer gave Jefferson four seconds to respond before shooting and killing her. The officers do not identify themselves as police in the video. Nor do they knock on the open front door of the house — instead, they creep around to the back and their movement is believed to have alerted Jefferson to look out the window.

The Fort Worth Police Department said in a statement that officers saw someone near a window inside the home, and that one of them fired after “perceiving a threat.”

Family members held a news conference Monday demanding that Dean be fired and criminally charged (watch via the video above).

“There is simply no justification for his actions,” said Ashley Carr, the victim’s sister. “We demand justice for Atatiana through an independent and thorough investigation.”

Jefferson’s brother, Adarius Carr, said: “This man murdered someone. He should be arrested.”

Jefferson was a pre-medicine graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and was working in pharmaceutical equipment sales.

The family has launched a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs and other expenses related to this case.
