*Judge Greg Mathis has weighed in on Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner’s defamation lawsuit against Ray J, suggesting that the case may be difficult to win given their shared history and the profits generated from their infamous sex tape.
Speaking with TMZ, Mathis remarked that Kim might struggle to establish a strong defamation claim against Ray J. He suggested that her best course of action could be pursuing a gag order or a cease-and-desist rather than a full defamation case.
The lawsuit, filed by attorney Alex Spiro on behalf of Kardashian and Jenner, accuses Ray J of defamation after he alleged that the two were under federal investigation for racketeering. Spiro underscored the seriousness of the claims, stating, “Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian have never brought a defamation claim before nor have they been distracted by noise – but this false and serious allegation left no choice.”

According to court documents, Ray J made the disputed statements twice. In the Tubi documentary “United States vs. Sean Combs,” he said, “If you told me the Kardashians was being charged for racketeering, I might believe it.” He later repeated similar claims during a September 24 livestream, asserting that federal prosecutors were pursuing racketeering charges against the reality stars. Spiro labeled these comments as the “most malicious defamatory conduct.”
The filing alleges that Ray J “has engaged in a sustained campaign of harassment and defamation” toward Kardashian and Jenner “for more than two decades.” It traces this alleged pattern of behavior back to his brief relationship with Kardashian, which ended in 2005, two years before their sex tape became public. The complaint states, “Unable to accept the end of his fleeting relationship with Ms. Kardashian over twenty years ago, Ray J has repeatedly sought to attach himself to Plaintiffs’ names and exploit their prominence for personal gain.”
Spiro also categorically denied the allegations, saying, “Ray J’s public statements are blatantly false.” He added, “No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.” The lawsuit contends that Ray J made his statements “with reckless disregard for the truth under the actual malice standard.”
Ray J’s remarks resurfaced during a livestream with Chrisean Rock, where he claimed “the feds are coming” and speculated that a case involving the Kardashians could eclipse other major legal controversies. The complaint argues that his reliance on “unsubstantiated assertions” without any factual basis shows “a fundamental disregard for truth and a willful intent to harm Plaintiffs’ reputations.”
