*Wiz Khalifa has been handed a nine-month prison sentence in Romania after an appeals court overturned a previous fine related to marijuana possession. According to XXL, the ruling was issued by the Constanța Court of Appeal, citing the Romanian outlet Cancan.
The case traces back to July 2024, when the rapper was performing at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinești, Romania. Authorities stopped Wiz following his set after he was allegedly seen smoking marijuana on stage, an act that carries serious legal consequences under Romania’s strict drug laws.
Police detained the artist briefly and reportedly found him in possession of more than 18 grams of marijuana. Although he was not taken into custody at the time, the incident prompted legal action. Wiz addressed the situation publicly in a tweet on July 14, 2024. “Last nights show was amazing,” he wrote. “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big a*s joint next time.”
Initially, Wiz received a citation and was ordered to pay a fine of 3,000 lei, equivalent to $700. That decision, however, was challenged by Romania’s prosecutor’s office, which sought a harsher penalty.
The appeal ultimately resulted in the nine-month prison sentence. Authorities may pursue an extradition request to enforce the ruling, as Wiz resides in the U.S.
According to TMZ, Wiz Khalifa’s legal team has already filed an appeal against the prison sentence.
