*As the government shutdown shows no signs of ending, Whoopi Goldberg has a message for lawmakers in Washington: stop taking your salaries.
TheWrap reports that the host of ABC’s “The View” voiced her frustration during the show’s Hot Topics segment. “I would like Republicans and Democrats to come together and decide they’re not going to take their salaries,” Goldberg declared. “Because, until you are getting — until this affects you the way it’s affecting your constituents, y’all are not going to settle this.”
Her remarks drew immediate support from her fellow panelists. “So, as an American, I am asking that you not take a salary until you settle this,” she continued. “And I think lots of people might feel the same way.”

During the shutdown, members of Congress have continued to receive pay while hundreds of thousands of government employees are either furloughed or working without compensation. The women of “The View” have voiced frustration over that disparity, arguing it is unjust for politicians to collect paychecks as families across the country face financial strain.
The financial hardships facing hundreds of thousands of federal workers have intensified calls for Democrats and Republicans to reach an agreement to end the impasse. The ongoing partial federal government shutdown, starting October 1, 2025, has lasted 17 days, making it one of the longest in U.S. history and the fourth during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Since 1977, 21 shutdowns have occurred, with all presidents except George W. Bush and Joe Biden experiencing at least one multi-day shutdown. The current deadlock matches the duration of the 2013 shutdown under Barack Obama, also 17 days long, driven by Republican opposition to the Affordable Care Act.
