*Wendy Williams’ ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, has hit a legal setback in his attempt to challenge her guardianship.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, a judge has dismissed Hunter’s motion to file a lawsuit on Williams’ behalf, ruling that he could not proceed as her “friend” in the case. The decision leaves Hunter the option to refile a complaint, but only with claims made in his own name.
Hunter originally filed a federal lawsuit in New York back in June, seeking to end Williams’ guardianship under Sabrina Morrissey. He accused Morrissey of exploiting the former talk show host and demanded $250 million in damages. However, Williams later stated she had nothing to do with the legal filing and described it as a potential “cash grab.”

Williams, who called into “TMZ Live Stream” on Thursday, reacted to the case’s dismissal and admitted she is uncertain about her current financial situation. Her guardianship began in 2022 after Wells Fargo froze her accounts due to what the bank described as suspicious activity. The court appointed Morrissey to oversee her personal and financial affairs.
Recent court filings obtained by PEOPLE confirm that Williams’ guardianship has been extended through November 5, 2025, following medical evaluations that reaffirmed her diagnoses of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia. The results, which included brain imaging, determined that her conditions significantly impair her daily functioning. Williams currently resides in a memory care facility under Morrissey’s supervision.
Despite her health struggles, Williams has voiced strong objections to the guardianship. During a March appearance on “The View,” she shared, “I am not permitted to do anything but stay on this floor, the memory unit floor, where these people are 90 and 80 and 70. Look, I’m 60. Why am I here…where people don’t remember anything?”
Her ongoing legal and medical battles were also featured in the Investigation Discovery special “TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?” which aired on May 19.
