*Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former University of Virginia student, was sentenced to life in prison Friday for the 2022 attack that claimed the lives of three UVA football players and wounded two additional students.
Judge Cheryl Higgins delivered the maximum sentence for Jones, who had previously pleaded guilty, according to CNN. The ruling includes five life terms connected to the deaths of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry, as well as the aggravated malicious wounding of Michael Hollins and Marlee Morgan, according to Cville Right Now. Authorities said the shooting occurred aboard a charter bus near a campus parking garage as students returned from a trip to Washington, DC.

The violence triggered a 12-hour lockdown across the Charlottesville campus. Investigators later determined Jones had no prior connection with the players he shot, and that their only interaction came shortly before the attack.

During sentencing, Higgins said the evidence showed no one threatened or bullied Jones that night. She added that while Jones experienced “distortions in his perception” of reality, he still grasped the nature of his actions, pointing to a text message he sent to several people beforehand saying he would either “go to hell or spend 100-plus years in jail.” The judge also described how Jones lied to the police he encountered shortly after disposing of his clothing and the weapon.
During sentencing, Jones addressed the court through tears, saying he regretted the devastation he caused “everyone on that bus.”
“I’m so sorry,” he said. “I caused so much pain.” He told the victims’ families, “I didn’t know your sons. I didn’t know your boys. And I wish I did.”
The university agreed last year to a $9 million settlement with the victims and their families, whose attorney argued UVA failed to remove Jones despite concerning behavior.
Jones will be eligible to seek parole at age 60.
