*Tyrese Gibson is pursuing primary custody of his 7-year-old daughter, Soraya, after alleging that his ex-wife, Samantha Gibson, moved the child more than 2,500 miles away from him without proper agreement.
According to Us, the actor filed new court documents on October 3 claiming he opposed the relocation from Georgia to Oregon, where Samantha and Soraya have now settled. The former couple has continued to face legal disputes following Samantha’s 2023 award of primary custody.
According to the filing, Tyrese says Samantha first notified him in an August 13 email. In that message, she wrote, “I’ve spent a lot of time in prayer, fasting, and careful consideration, and after much wrestling with the decision, I truly believe God is leading me to move out of state to the West Coast — specifically … Oregon.” She also explained, “This isn’t a decision I take lightly, and my intention is to be as transparent and collaborative as possible.”

Samantha allegedly emphasized that she did not intend to disrupt Soraya’s bond with her father. “I want to be very clear that I have no desire to interfere with Soraya’s relationship with her father,” she wrote, adding that the move “could make travel easier and more convenient for extended visits.” Tyrese argues that discussions about their updated child support arrangement earlier in the summer never included a mention of potential relocation.
In early September, Tyrese responded in a text stating his firm objection: “No, Samantha. No way. No how. I do not agree.” He insisted the move violated the intent of their previous agreement and stressed that Soraya’s home should remain in Atlanta near her sister Shayla. He reiterated this in a letter where he wrote, “Now, more than ever, Soraya needs family stability — not more chaos.”
Samantha, in her November 6 counterclaim, confirmed her move and argued she did not need Tyrese’s consent. Her filing alleged that Tyrese failed to use all his parenting time and often relied on a nanny during visits. She also claimed that past moves by Tyrese occurred without notice.
The custody dispute remains unresolved as the case continues.
