*The Haitian American Diaspora are tribal people. What affects one of them most likely affects all of them. That’s something Donald Trump and JD Vance didn’t count on when they perpetuated a lie about Haitian immigrants in Ohio.
When Vance picked up that lie from social media about Haitians eating pets and then Trump took it nationwide by stating the lie out loud during the presidential debate, it was meant to be a racist dog whistle to their MAGA base. What Republicans didn’t count on was how tribal affiliation works: When they villainized the 15,000 Haitian immigrants in Springfield, they forgot about the 715,000 more Haitian immigrants living throughout the United States who equally were as offended by their comments. And more importantly, most of these Haitians are registered VOTERS!
More than 500,000 Haitian Americans live in Florida. Trump won Florida in 2020 by just 371,000 votes. Their vote could be the difference between Trump’s loss and Vice President Kamala Harris’ win in Florida in November. That’s just one state. Where do the other 215,000 Haitian immigrants live?
