*The “Conjuring” universe is preparing to close its most haunting chapter yet. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have released a first-look teaser for “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the ninth entry in the franchise and the final installment in the core series. The official teaser gives fans a glimpse into what director Michael Chaves calls “the darkest thing we’ve ever seen in the series.”
Returning to lead the cast are Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time, the film draws from one of their most disturbing real-world cases—the infamous Smurl haunting. Set in 1986, ‘Last Rites’ picks up five years after the events of “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” Though retired and lecturing at universities, the Warrens are pulled back into a terrifying new investigation when a Pennsylvania family reports a series of sinister supernatural disturbances.
As part of Entertainment Weekly‘s exclusive first-look cover story on the final chapter of Ed and Lorraine’s saga, the cast and creators are teasing what’s to come.
“The Smurl case was the darkest thing we’ve ever seen in the series,” said Chaves in EW’s exclusive video featurette.

“They’re both contemplating hanging it up,” added longtime producer Peter Safran. “Unfortunately, because of their innate goodness, they actually can’t walk away from it.”
Farmiga teased, “This demon has a vendetta, and what it wants is very, very personal.”
Viewers will also get a closer look at the Warrens’ daughter, Judy, played by Mia Tomlinson, whose life growing up among cursed artifacts becomes a focal point of the story. “This demon has a vendetta,” said Farmiga, “and what it wants is very, very personal.”
The film’s cast includes Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, and others, with real-life Judy and Tony Spera making cameo appearances. The script was written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Producers include James Wan and Peter Safran, with filming having wrapped in London last November.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” will hit theaters worldwide on September 5, 2025. Watch the teaser above.
While this marks the conclusion of the Warrens’ saga, future installments in the “Conjuring” Universe, and an upcoming HBO Max series, are still in the works.
