*Fans excited for the upcoming “Martin” spinoff, “Varnell Hill” will see some familiar faces, but not all of them. In a recent interview with TMZ, Martin Lawrence shared updates on the new series and made it clear that one of the most talked-about characters from the original show, Sheneneh Jenkins, won’t be making a comeback.
Lawrence confirmed that he will reprise his role as Martin in the new BET+ comedy, which centers on the beloved character Varnell Hill, played by Tommy Davidson. “It’s going to be a funny show,” Lawrence said. “Yeah, man, it’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re working on it. We’re putting everything together.” While fans can expect some nostalgia, Lawrence stopped short of promising appearances from other original characters.
When asked directly about Sheneneh, a loud, flamboyant character Lawrence portrayed in drag during “Martin‘s” original run, the comedian hesitated. “No, I doubt that,” he said, when asked if she would appear in the spinoff.
“Varnell Hill” will carve a new path with its satirical take on the entertainment industry. Here’s the official logline for Varnell Hill: “The series explores Varnell’s journey to remain relevant in an ever-evolving industry and the corporate dynamics of network executives, business stakeholders, and creative teams involved in the making of the show. With its blend of satire, humor, cutaways, and fourth-wall breaks, the show promises to engage audiences in a fresh and innovative way.”
“Did you miss me? Well, now you don’t have to!” Davidson shared in a statement. “Fans have requested it and now it’s coming to BET+!”

Lawrence and Davidson are co-creators, with longtime Martin collaborator Bentley Kyle Evans on board as showrunner. Production details and a premiere date will be announced soon.
“Martin,” which aired from 1992 to 1997, ran for five seasons. The sitcom starred Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Carl Anthony Payne II, Tichina Arnold, Jon Gries, Garrett Morris, and the late Thomas Mikall Ford, who passed away in 2016. The series is now available for streaming on BET+.
