*Teyana Taylor is not closing the door on revisiting one of her most acclaimed film roles to date. The multi-hyphenate artist was honored with the Creative Impact in Breakthrough Performance Award at a special brunch on Jan. 4 during the Palm Springs International Film Awards, recognizing her work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another.”
Taylor portrays Perfidia Beverly Hills, a resistance fighter whose personal choices leave a lasting impact on her daughter, Willa. After abandoning her child at birth, Perfidia disappears for 16 years before her past resurfaces amid a sweeping conspiracy. Sharing the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn, Taylor delivers a performance that stands out within the ensemble.
The role was shaped through close collaboration between Taylor and Anderson, including scenes addressing postpartum depression. Drawing from her own experiences as a mother, Taylor improvised dialogue centered on emotional isolation and insecurity. “I feel like it’s a topic that’s not spoken about enough. I was anxious and excited to start getting into those layers,” she said, per Variety, expressing gratitude that the material was included.

Taylor also connected deeply with Perfidia’s refusal to compromise herself. “[Perfidia] makes decisions that we may not all agree with, but we can all agree on the fact that she’s unapologetically herself and stands 10 toes down on a lot of things that we probably wouldn’t have been able to do at one point,” she explained.
The mother of two added, “Especially as a woman, we’re told we’re too confident, we got to tone it down… ‘No, you won’t quiet me. You won’t set me down. I won’t play house with you.’”
Taylor says she would happily return to further explore Perfidia’s story in a sequel, spinoff, or expanded storyline. “He could have pulled a ‘Wicked!’” she said of Anderson, later adding, “You could literally merge the other pieces, get a few new scenes with me — and then drop it, drop it like a mixtape!”
“One Battle After Another” premiered theatrically in September and became an awards-season contender before arriving on HBO Max on December 19. The Warner Bros. release features an ensemble cast including Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and Alana Haim.
