*Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, “One Battle After Another,” is set to make its streaming debut this winter. After opening in theaters in September and quickly becoming a major awards-season contender, the Warner Bros. release will arrive exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, December 19.
The action thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role as a former revolutionary forced back into conflict when his daughter is taken by a corrupt military figure. The film follows his attempt to save her while reckoning with the personal and moral consequences of his past.
Alongside DiCaprio, the ensemble cast includes Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Wood Harris, and Alana Haim. The project is written and directed by Anderson, with production handled by Adam Somner, Sara Murphy, and Anderson himself, while Will Weiske serves as executive producer.
In discussing the film’s themes, Anderson emphasized his character-first approach to storytelling. “The biggest mistake I could make in a story like this is to put politics up in the front,” Anderson said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “That has a short shelf life. To sustain a story over two hours and 40 minutes, you have to care about the characters and take those big swings in terms of the emotional arcs of people and their pursuits and why you love that person and why you hate this person. That’s not a thing that ever goes out of fashion. But neither does fascism and neither does people doing bad s— to other people. Unfortunately, that doesn’t go out of style, either. That’s just how we humans are.”
The film has received significant recognition during awards season. It leads the nominations for the 46th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards with nine nods and has been named a finalist at the 38th USC Libraries Scripter Awards.
At the Golden Globes, “One Battle After Another” earned nine nominations, including best comedy or musical, best actor for DiCaprio, and best actress for Chase Infiniti. The 83rd Golden Globe Awards will air January 11 on CBS and stream on Paramount+, with Nikki Glaser returning as host.
