*Teyana Taylor has a colorful way of describing what it is like to be both a Hollywood star and a devoted mother.
Taylor stopped to chat with PEOPLE at the TIME Women of the Year Gala in West Hollywood, California on March 10, where she drew a playful but heartfelt comparison between her dual life and a beloved fictional character.
“I think because when I am home and when we are together, I’m in such mommy mode that … it’s almost like Hannah Montana,” Taylor said, referencing the sharp contrast between her public persona and her life behind closed doors. She went on to paint a vivid picture of what home life looks like with her two daughters. “I live two different lives where it’s like, ‘Okay, here’s carpet mommy. But then here is mommy, when she’s home, we’re going to the trampoline park, we’re cooking, we’re playing, we’re drawing.’ So they understand balance.”

Taylor shares her daughters — Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., 10, and Rue Rose Shumpert, 5 — with ex-husband Iman Shumpert. She spoke about how naturally both girls have taken to navigating the world their mother inhabits, noting that they move just as confidently on a red carpet as they do at home.
Her eldest daughter drew particular praise. Taylor described Junie as a selfless “little celebrity” and natural “leader” who carries herself with quiet confidence rather than leaning on her mother’s celebrity.
“She don’t walk in saying, ‘My mom needs this,’ or ‘I’m this.’ I love that balance,” Taylor said. “But then you see Junie and Rue on a red carpet and they posing and serving. So I just think it’s amazing to see how they navigate balance. It’s really inspiring. It just makes me proud as a parent.”
